Pro formas are supplied for you to complete. Interpretation is important and you will be asked to discuss the results of the business for the year and its financial position as at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The case study material [Grekz] can be downloaded from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecourse.co.uk\/materials\/grekz.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STUDY HINTS FOR GREKZ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This case study tests your understanding of two things:<\/p>\n<p>Firstly<\/p>\n<p><strong>The form and content of a set of sole trader&#8217;s financial statements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You need to be familiar with the layout of the following financial statements<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Statement of Cash Flows<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 1: Go through the case study and list all the transactions which involve an <em>immediate<\/em> cash inflow or outflow. While you are doing this create two lists i) cash inflows to the business and ii) cash outflows from the business.<\/li>\n<li>Step 2: Rearrange the cash flows in the form of a simple cash flow statement showing the cash in the business as at the end of the first year&#8217;s operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>The Statement of Financial Position<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Morag Shalini case study will be useful here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 1: go through the case study and list all the assets and liabilities of the business as at the end of the year. Separate the assets into <em>non-current <\/em>(or <em>fixed assets) <\/em>and <em>current assets.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Step 2: go through the case study and list all the liabilities of the business. Separate these into <em>current liabilities <\/em>and <em>non-current liabilities<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Step 3: the difference between the <em>total assets<\/em> and the <em>total liabilities <\/em>will the <em>Capital<\/em> as at the end of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>The Income Statement<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is the hardest of the three statements to prepare. The Income Statement is prepared on an <em>accruals basis<\/em>. This means that you are tracing\/calculating items of expense and income relating the reporting period <strong>not <\/strong>the actual amount paid or received. There is a elearning presentation which introduces the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ecourse.co.uk\/media\/accrual\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fundamentals of accrual accounting<\/a> <\/strong>(click the link to access this material). You <strong><em>must<\/em> <\/strong>go through this. It will help you with your preparation for the seminar. Make sure you can answer all the quiz questions!<\/p>\n<p>The hardest part of the Income Statement is at the top i.e. calculating<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Revenue, and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Cost of sales<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gross profit will be the difference between these two figures.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t put the owner&#8217;s drawings in the Income Statement &#8211; it&#8217;s not a business expense. Drawings should be deducted from Capital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be prepared to spend quite a lot of time on this exercise &#8211; it&#8217;s not easy if you are a beginner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is best to attempt this <em>before<\/em> your seminar so that you have questions to ask the tutor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Suggested solutions will be published after the last seminar.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seminar_2_Friday_14_November\"><\/span><strong>Seminar 2 [Friday 14 November]<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For the <strong>second seminar<\/strong> I would like you to focus on liquidity. \u2018Cash is king!\u2019 they say, especially in a recession. The origin of this phrase is unclear, but it has been attributed to Per G Gyllenhammar\u00a0who used it in 1988, after the global stock market crash in 1987.\u00a0Gyllenhammar was Chief Executive Officer of Swedish car group Volvo at the time.<\/p>\n<p>You should look at the following companies:<\/p>\n<p>Tesco PLC &#8211; 2025 financial statements from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tescoplc.com\/media\/ky0bfwpo\/tesco_ar25_interactive.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nKier Group PLC &#8211; 2025 financial statements from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kier.co.uk\/media\/3lvnd42r\/kier-ar2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the links above to go to each company\u2019s website and download the latest financial report\/statements. Use the material covered in the lecture sessions to investigate the liquidity of each company. Just concentrate on liquidity \u2013 nothing else just yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tesco\u00a0<\/strong>is one of the biggest UK retail companies. So its liquidity should be excellent. Do the liquidity ratios confirm this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kier Group<\/strong>\u00a0is a major engineering company. Engineering companies have a very different asset structure to supermarkets and football clubs. Some small engineering companies can be prone to liquidity difficulties in a recession. What about big ones? What do you make of this company\u2019s liquidity ratios?<\/p>\n<p>Are the traditional liquidity ratios of any use at all? Are there simpler or better ways to assess liquidity?
